Note: Unity 4 support dropped after v1.06

Shader Forge is a node-based shader editor, aiming to push the visual quality of Unity to new heights, giving you the artistic freedom of shader creation in a visual and intuitive way - no code required!

What am I buying?
• Commercial license of Shader Forge + upcoming updates
• A pack of example shaders to study and use freely

Workflow:
• Create shaders visually, without any coding needed
• No extra files to sync over your version control system; Shader Forge uses a single file for shaders - the .shader file itself
• SF writes CG shaders that can be used in any project, without installing Shader Forge
• Works in both Unity Pro and Unity Free
Documentation and support center, for contributing feedback and bug reports

Some of the features:
• Built-in Physically Based Lighting mode and energy conserving shading
• Visual and intuitive interface - Get a clear overview of what each node does
• Custom lighting nodes and IBL support
• DX11 Tessellation & Displacement
• Transparency; both partial and alpha clipping
• Refraction & Render Textures
• Optionally use lightmapping and light probes / Spherical harmonics
• Plus all the essentials such as cubemaps, custom blending modes, depth sorting, fog control, and much much more!

Alpha/Beta tests so far:
Shader Forge has been alpha-tested by a wide range of developers at companies ranging from several large studios such as Valve, Blizzard, DICE, Ubisoft, Bungie, EA, Avalanche Studios, Rovio, to indie studios such as Killbrite, InXile, The Chinese Room, and even developers like Marmoset, Samsung and Unity themselves.

I'm super excited about this, as it's my first asset release; which I hope is the start of a longer commitment to keep this up-to-date and as good as possible :)

Brings artist shader creation to Unity

(69 of 70 found this review helpful)

I have basic scripting capabilities as an artist and experience with Unreal's material editor and also some experience with Strumpy, Shader Forge Eclipses them all even in it's early beta state. Everything about SF is great and a must buy extention for Unity. In all honesty Unity should implement this into the editor and give Joachim a partnership deal.

Suggestion moving forward with development of the plugin would be to add a Mobile Mode so the entire shader is optimized throughout creation for mobile, limiting nodes etc that would harm mobile performance.

Buy it!

Price was a bit steep for my taste but after i used the asset it become the most important milestone in my workflow. Currently changing all my problematic shaders using SF right now and they look great and behave even greater.
I was looking a mesh terrain shader without all those bells and whistles. Just splatmap and detail maps for IOS. It was really simple to build with SF and the shader was done in 10 mins. POOF!! a mesh terrain shader that blends colormap and countless detail maps based on view direction.
Great asset.
Only thing is it needs a whole lot of more tutorials for artists like myself. The ones are great for startup but after that you are pretty left alone by yourself.

Superb!

I thought there might be a lot of teething troubles during early release but the package seems to work really well. This gives me masses or power to adjust the look and feel of my games without the need to buy in external shaders or rely on my own shader programming. So far it seems quite simple to create basic shaders but there is a ton of depth which I have yet to delve into. This is without doubt a 5 star package. I would only ask for a few more example shaders for us noobs to be able to base our new shaders on. There are some amazing examples in the package but I think there are some basic ones lacking such as mettalic and cartoon style shders.

Other than all that, it's actually great fun to work with and you can see your models in game update as you adjust your shader parameters.

Really great asset! Thank you!

I'm really glad you like it Simon! I'll be sure to include more example shaders once it goes from beta to 1.0 :)
